Emerging fern fronds

I trimmed these in the nick of time.  It’s easy to shear the old growth before the new fronds uncurl.  Waiting too long makes for a time consuming process, a careful snipping stem-by-stem, to not damage delicate new shoots.

I wonder if this is a fiddlehead fern.  I want to eat some, a potential new food experience, not from my yard though.  These look awfully hairy.  Just looked up cooking directions, (how I lived without instant internet access to research any given subject is beyond me) and the furry bits are removed before cooking.

Must foray into the forest to forage for fiddlehead ferns.  That’s a lot of “f” words.

I am mostly done trimming mine except for an area in the back that has a big old trench running through it at the moment.

I've got lots of ferns in my yard...I obviously need to get out there and do some trimming. Quickly.
